This article will discuss the importance of looking at personal development online in order to help grow. With this in mind, I would like to talk about the Islami Women's Welfare Society (IWWS). It is an Islamic non-governmental organisation that gives free counselling and training to Muslim women in Malaysia. This article will explore how they approach social media and online mediums in order to reach out, make connections with women, teach them about Islam and their rights under the law. Furthermore it will additionally explore IWWS' use of digital technology which can be seen through their Facebook page or SERMS (Sharia Compliance Management System) app. My final thoughts are; it is important to look at digital media as a tool that can be used in order to further the goals of an organisation. IWWS is a charity organisation that works with the needs of Muslim women. IWWS aims to carry out its work with people using two very different mediums; online and offline. Regardless of whether they want to advertise, connect with people online or simply grow their core members, they must use the same mediums. This will help them to reach out, share ideas and more importantly implement change in women's lives for the better. 'Digital Sharia' refers to "the combined religious practices referred to as Islamic Shari'ah". Through this, it is a way to keep a log of all actions and behaviour. The app can be installed on a smartphone, so that the user can have a better understanding of their Sharia obligations. The IWWS uses digital technology to further their goals and they have been able to do this through social media such as Facebook and an Android app called SERMS (Sharia Compliance Management System). The latter was developed in 2014 by the IWWS as an effort to help Muslims stay on track with their religious obligations. The app aims to be "a comprehensive database on everything related to Islamic teachings and practices". Users can also learn and search for Islamic knowledge through its 'Ask A Scholar' feature. SERMS assists users in seeking religious guidance and answers to their questions through the app's 'Ask a Scholar' feature. The app has over 9,000 Islamic scholars covering topics such as "faith practices, cultural and social norms, and even common norms of daily life". This is accomplished through the use of Audio and Image mode. On the other hand, SERMS also help users gain a better understanding of how to live their life through Islamic teachings from an Islamic perspective. In addition to this SERMS also organises users' system in a Sharia-compliant manner. For instance, it will be able to categorise certain apps or websites on your phone with regards to their permissibility under Islam. You can then choose which app or website is most appropriate for you. As the IWWS does not own or operate its own social media platform, it works with Facebook and other third party platforms such as Instagram. They chose to work with Facebook because they believed that this medium was "well suited to their objectives", such as "to communicate with prospective donors and volunteers, share news about events and workshops, recruit new members and disseminate information about the IWWS". With regards to Instagram, the organisation uses it in order to share photographs of conferences and other events attended by Muslim women. Some of these photos can be found on their Facebook page.
